OUR HISTORY
In 1977, a few civic-minded and concerned individuals took note of the fact that African Americans in Central Brooklyn who had fallen on hard times and were chronically ill and in need of compassion and care had no place to go. As a result, this visionary group of men and women, all residents of Crown Heights at the time, began working towards establishing a healthcare facility that would meet needs of this underserved community. Through a generous donation of land from R & S Strauss, a four-story, 295-bed facility was completed and in June of that year Marcus Garvey Residential Rehab Pavilion was born.
More than 30 years after its inception, Marcus Garvey Residential Rehab Pavilion continues the original mission of its founders—to provide competent and compassionate care to all our residents and to treat all members of the community we serve with dignity and respect.
OUR NAME
Our facility is named in honor of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, one of the greatest leaders of peoples of African descent. Born on August 18, 1887 in Jamaica, West Indies, Garvey dedicated his entire life to improving the conditions of African descendants throughout the world. Garvey was a publisher, journalist, entrepreneur and founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Among other things, the UNIA aimed: to promote the spirit of race, pride and love; to administer to and assist the needy; to reclaim the fallen of the race. Garvey’s commitment to self-determination, unity, and self-improvement is the inspiration for our mission.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to provide excellent, comprehensive, competent and compassionate care in an environment where all our residents are treated with kindness, dignity and respect.
